In this article, I will review the 2024 Madrid Open men’s singles final match. The Madrid Open is an ATP 1000 Masters tournament held on clay courts. This year’s final was between Félix Auger-Aliassime and Andrey Rublev. This was Félix’s first ATP Masters 1000 final in singles and this was Andrey Rublev’s fifth ATP Masters 1000 final in singles.
Set 1
Félix broke Rublev’s service in the first game of the first set. Félix held his service game and went ahead 2-0 at the start. In the third game, Félix had a chance to break Rublev’s serve again but he could not capitalize on it. But in the 5th game, he got a chance to break Rublev’s service again, and this time he used it and took the first set 4-1. But in the next game, Rublev came back brilliantly and broke Felix’s service. Felix could not hold his service game by going ahead 40-0 at one point in this game. In the tenth game, Rublev had an opportunity to break Félix’s serve to make the set 5-5 but he was unsuccessful and Felix held his service game and won the first set 6-4.
Set 2
In the second set, it was a very close battle between the two and both served well and held their own service games. In the fifth game, Rublev again had an opportunity to break Félix’s serve but could not use it. Rublev was not in his usual rhythm but he was not giving up the fight. Félix, on the other hand, was very efficient and didn’t look like he was playing his first ATP Masters 1000 in singles. But in the twelfth game, Rublev broke Félix’s service and won the set 7-5.
Set 3
From the beginning of the third set, Rublev began to show his familiar rhythm. And he continued to serve brilliantly and was holding his service game with ease. In the second game of the third set, Rublev could not use the breakpoint. Félix holds this service game. Even then, when he was under pressure in his service game in this set, Felix was hitting a great deep serve. At the other end, a near-perfect service game was available from Rublev. And like the second set, in the twelfth game of the third set, Rublev broke Félix’s service and won the third set with a 7-5 margin, and with this, he won the final match 4-6 7-5 7-5.
This is Rublev’s second ATP Masters 1000 title. He previously won the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2023, also a clay court tournament.
