The fourth quarter-final of the men’s singles of the Italian Open 2024 took place between Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and Nicolás Jarry of Chile. Both players serve very well and both have strong forehands. Stefanos Tsitsipas’s one-handed backhand is spectacular.
Set 1
Both held their serve in the first three games of the first set. But in the fourth game, Stefanos Tsitsipas broke Nicolás Jarry’s service. Then held his serve in the fifth game to go ahead 4-1. After that, Nicolás Jarry held his two service games but could not break any of Stefanos Tsitsipas’s service. Stefanos Tsitsipas then held his service game in the ninth game and won the first set 6-3.
Set 2
Both played very well in the second set. Both were serving great and holding their serve. Stefanos Tsitsipas had a chance to break Nicolás Jarry’s serve in the 11th game of the second set but in the end, Nicolás Jarry showed his mental toughness and held his service game. After that, in the 12th game, Stefanos Tsitsipas made some unforced errors and Nicolás Jarry broke his serve and he won the second set 7-5.
Set 3
In the third game of the third set, Stefanos Tsitsipas broke Nicolás Jarry’s serve. Stefanos Tsitsipas took a 2-1 lead but Nicolás Jarry came back in the next game, breaking Stefanos Tsitsipas’ serve to make it 2-2 after 4 games. This set was evenly contested, we could see great forehands from both of them. Stefanos Tsitsipas made a crucial unforced error in the tenth game and Nicolás Jarry won the game and won the set 6-4.
Result
Nicolás Jarry won this match 3-6 7-5 6-4 and reached the semi-finals. This is his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. In this tournament, Alejandro Tabilo, another Chilean player, also won the first quarterfinal and reached the semi-finals.
