India’s new ODI captain and vice-captain:
The squads for both ODI and T20 formats have been announced for the upcoming series against Australia. There are a few surprises in India’s ODI lineup. The squad features two of the greatest ODI cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, yet Rohit Sharma has not been appointed as captain. Instead, Shubman Gill has been chosen to lead the team. Notably, India secured the ICC Champions Trophy under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy earlier this year. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that Shubman Gill’s captaincy is part of the strategy to prepare for the 2027 World Cup and to establish leadership across various formats.
Ravindra Jadeja has also been omitted from the ODI team, although Ajit Agarkar stated that he will play a significant role in India’s ODI strategy, including the 2027 ODI World Cup. Hardik Pandya is absent from both the ODI and T20 squads due to an injury. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI series to mitigate injury risks, but he has been included in the T20 series. Despite a strong performance in the IPL, Shreyas Iyer was not selected for the recently concluded Asia Cup; however, he has been prioritized in the ODI team, albeit not in the T20 squad, and has been appointed as the vice-captain for the ODI series. Other than this, there are no additional surprises in the ODI team. The ODI squad consists of fifteen members, while the T20 team has sixteen members.
