PSG staged an incredible comeback to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in a tie-breaker to win the UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed the UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed their inaugural UEFA Super Cup title after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in a penalty shootout. PSG managed to come back from a 2-0 deficit after 84 minutes of the match to secure the championship. The UEFA Super Cup is contested between the champions of the two primary European club tournaments – the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

Key moments of the match

PSG’s manager, Luis Enrique, excluded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from the match squad, and Donnarumma revealed via a post a few hours later that he would be departing from the club. Lucas Chevalier was the goalkeeper for PSG for this match.

Tottenham Hotspur opened the scoring in the 39th minute of the first half, thanks to Mickey van de Ven. The goal resulted from a set piece. Tottenham’s goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario executed a free kick from the right wing, nearly from the centre of the pitch, where a Tottenham player took a shot on goal; PSG’s goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier made the initial save, but Mickey van de Ven capitalized on the rebound to score.

Just after the start of the second half, Tottenham Hotspur doubled their lead in the 48th minute with a second goal. This goal also stemmed from a free kick, converted by Cristian Romero, who headed in a delivery from Pedro Porro.

PSG ramped up their offensive efforts in the second half but failed to register any goals. PSG netted their first goal of the match in the 85th minute. Substitute Lee Kang-in received the ball from Vitinha and scored with a powerful low shot.

In the fourth minute of injury time, PSG equalized the match with a second goal from another substitute, Gonçalo Ramos. Ousmane Dembélé delivered an excellent cross from the right side of the penalty area, which Gonçalo Ramos converted with a header.

In 2023, extra time was removed from the UEFA Super Cup; thus, if the match remains tied after regulation, there will be no additional time, and the victor will be determined through a penalty shootout. As the match was even at 2-2 following regulation, a penalty shootout ensued, in which PSG triumphed 4-3, making them the first French club to win the competition.
