The third quarter-final of the Italian Open 2024 men’s singles took place between Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz and America’s Tommy Paul. Hubert Hurkacz is well-known in the tennis world for his incredible serve.
Set 1
Tommy Paul broke Hubert Hurkacz’s service in the third game of the first set. Then Hubert Hurkacz broke Tommy Paul’s serve in the fourth game. After the first four games, the result of the set was 2-2. Hubert Hurkacz made some unforced errors in the fifth game and Tommy Paul broke his serve. After that, he held his service game and went ahead in the first set at 4-2. In the 10th game, Hubert Hurkacz could not use the break point in the first time, but after getting the break point again, he used it and the result of the set became 5-5. But Hubert Hurkacz made some unforced errors in the next game and his service was broken. Tommy Paul held his serve in the 12th game and won the first set 7–5. The set lasted about 58 minutes.

In the first game of the second set, Tommy Paul broke Hubert Hurkacz’s service and kept his own service game to go ahead 2-0. In the third game, Tommy Paul failed to break Hubert Hurkacz’s serve and Hubert Hurkacz held his serve. In the fourth game, Hubert Hurkacz took advantage of some unforced errors from Tommy Paul to break Tommy Paul’s serve. After the first four games, the result of the set was 2-2. After that, in the eighth game, Hubert Hurkacz broke Tommy Paul’s service again. He held his service in the ninth game and won the set 6-3. In this set, he won 6 of the last 7 games. This game lasted for about 40 min.
Set 3
Hubert Hurkacz broke Tommy Paul’s service in the first game of the third set and went ahead 2-0 by holding his service. But Tommy Paul won his service in the third game and broke Hubert Hurkacz’s service in the fourth game to make the set 2-2. In the fifth game, Tommy Paul made some unforced errors and Hurkacz broke his serve. In the sixth game, Tommy Paul came back in style, taking advantage of some unforced errors from Hubert Hurkacz to break his serve to level the set at 3-3. After that, Tommy Paul held his serve and went ahead at 4-3. Hubert Hurkacz’s serve was broken again in the eighth game and Tommy Paul went ahead 5-3. Hubert Hurkacz got a break point in the ninth game, but he was unable to capitalize. The game lasted for about 15 minutes and Tommy Paul won the game and with this, he won the set 6-3.
Result
Tommy Paul won the match 7-5 3-6 6-3. After this win, he defeated two players in the top 10 in two consecutive matches. He defeated Daniil Medvedev in the previous match.
This is Tommy Paul’s third ATP Masters 1000 semi-final, and first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final on clay courts.
