The 42nd match of IPL 2024 was held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to bowl.
Kolkata Knight Riders Innings:
For Kolkata Knight Riders, their two openers, Philip Salt and Sunil Narine, started very aggressively. At the end of the first 6 overs of the powerplay, Kolkata Knight Riders made 76 for no loss. Even after the end of the powerplay, Kolkata Knight Riders continued to play in the same aggressive manner. No bowler could influence at all when these two were batting. Kolkata Knight Riders made 137 for no loss after 10 overs. Philip Salt and Sunil Narine put on a partnership of 138 for the first wicket.
Sunil Narine was dismissed in the 11th over, he was dismissed by Rahul Chahar. Sunil Narine played brilliantly. He scored 71 runs in 32 balls and he hit 9 fours and 4 sixes. Another opener, Philip Salt, also played brilliantly. He was dismissed off Sam Curran in the 13th over. He scored 75 off 37 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes. Kolkata Knight Riders’ run rate did not slow down despite the dismissal of two openers as Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell played in the same aggressive way.
Andre Russell was dismissed by Arshdeep Singh in the 16th over. He scored 24 runs off 12 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. After that Shreyas Iyer came to bat and he too played very well. He was also dismissed by Arshdeep Singh in the 19th over. He scored 28 runs off 10 balls and hit 1 four and 3 sixes. Venkatesh Iyer was run out on the last ball of the innings. He scored 39 runs in 23 balls which included 3 fours and 2 sixes. At the end of 20 overs, Kolkata Knight Riders scored 261 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
For Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets and Rahul Chahar, Sam Curran, and Harshal Patel took 1 wicket each.
Punjab Kings Innings:
Punjab Kings openers Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow started the innings in a similar aggressive manner as Kolkata Knight Riders openers. Prabhsimran Singh was more aggressive in the powerplay. the powerplay for Punjab Kings was very fruitful like Kolkata Knight Riders. At the end of the first 6 overs of the powerplay, Punjab Kings made 93 for 1 wicket. In the very last ball of the 6th over, Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed by Sunil Narine’s direct throw. He scored 54 runs off 20 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes.
Rilee Rossouw came to bat after that. Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw put on a wicket partnership of 85 runs. Jonny Bairstow was more ruthless against the bowlers of Kolkata Knight Riders in this partnership. Sunil Narine broke this partnership in the 13th over. He dismissed Rilee Rossouw. Rilee Rossouw scored 26 off 16 balls with 1 four and 2 sixes.
But despite the fall of this wicket, Kolkata Knight Riders could not get back into the match thanks to Jonny Bairstow and Shashank Singh. Both of them remained unbeaten and Punjab Kings won the match with 10 balls remaining. They both played fantastically. Jonny Bairstow scored an unbeaten 108 off 48 balls and hit 8 fours and 9 sixes. Shashank Singh scored an unbeaten 68 off 28 balls with 2 fours and 8 sixes.
