The fifth match of IPL 2024 was held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to field.
Gujarat Titans Innings:
Captain Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha came in to open for Gujarat Titans and got off to a good start. At the end of the first three overs, Gujarat Titans were 27 for no loss. But in the last ball of the 4th over, Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed by a perfect yorker from Jasprit Bumrah. Wriddhiman Saha score 19 runs off 15 balls.
Sai Sudharsan then came in to bat and he and Shubman Gill put on a partnership of 33 runs off 22 balls. Shubman Gill hit 1 brilliant four and 1 beautiful six off Shams Mulani in the fifth over. In the eighth over, Shubman Gill was caught by Rohit Sharma off Piyush Chawla and scored 31 runs off 22 balls, including 3 fours and 1 six.
Then Sai Sudharsan and Azmatullah Omarzai put on a partnership of 40 runs off 26 balls. Gerald Coetzee broke this partnership. He dismissed Azmatullah Omarzai in the last ball of the 12th over and was caught by Tilak Varma. This was Gerald Coetzee’s first wicket in IPL. Azmatullah Omarzai scored 17 off 11 balls.
Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in the seventeenth over. He dismissed David Miller on the first ball of this over. Hardik Pandya took the catch. David Miller was not successful today as he scored 12 runs off 11 balls. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Sai Sudharsan on the third ball of this over. Sai Sudharsan played well and he scored 45 runs in 39 balls, including three 4’s and 1 six.
Rahul Tewatia played well among the lower order batsmen, scoring 22 off 15 balls, and was dismissed by Gerald Coetzee on the first ball of the last over. At the end of 20 overs, Gujarat Titans were 168 for 6 wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah got three wickets, Gerald Coetzee got two wickets and Piyush Chawla got one wicket for Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians Innings:
Mumbai Indians did not start well as Ishan Kishan got out on the 4th ball of the first over by Azmatullah Omarzai and was caught by Wriddhiman Saha. Naman Dhir came to bat after that. In the third over, Naman Dhir hit three 4s and one 6 to Azmatullah Omarzai. But in the last ball of this over, Naman Dhir got out LBW to Azmatullah Omarzai. He scored 20 runs off 10 balls. At the end of 3 overs, Mumbai Indians were 2 wickets for 30 runs.
After that, both Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis were playing brilliantly and it looked like Mumbai Indians would reach the target of victory as well. They made a partnership of 77 runs in 55 balls. This partnership was broken by Sai Kishore. Rohit Sharma was out lbw on the first ball of the 13th over. He scored 43 runs off 29 balls, including seven 4s and a 6.
Tilak Varma came in to bat after that. He and Dewald Brevis put on a partnership of 22 runs off 22 balls. Mohit Sharma dismissed Dewald Brevis in the fifth ball of the 16th over. He took the catch off his own bowling. Dewald Brevis scored 46 off 38 balls and hit two 4s and three 6s. This dismissal brings Gujarat Titans back in the match. Mumbai Indians needed 39 runs to win in last 4 overs.
Rashid Khan conceded only 3 runs in the seventeenth over. Mohit Sharma dismissed Tim David on the last ball of the eighteenth over. David Miller took a diving catch with a lot of running. Tilak Varma hit a brilliant 6 off the first ball of the 19th over but was run out on the next ball. He scored 25 runs off 19 balls and he hit a 4 and a 6. Spencer Johnson dismissed Gerald Coetzee on the last ball of this over. Spencer Johnson took the catch off his own bowling.
19 runs were needed in the last over and captain Hardik Pandya was at the crease. The victory of Mumbai Indians was depending on him. Umesh Yadav came to bowl the last over for Gujarat Titans. Hardik Pandya hit a 6 on the first ball and a 4 on the next ball. In 4 balls 9 runs were needed for victory and it seemed that Mumbai Indians might win. Just then the complexion of the match changed. Umesh Yadav dismissed Hardik Pandya in the 3rd ball. Rahul Tewatia took the catch. Hardik Pandya scored 11 runs in 4 balls. Umesh Yadav dismissed again on the next ball, this time he dismissed Piyush Chawla. In the last 2 balls, Mumbai Indians needed 9 runs to win. But there were only 2 singles in the last 2 balls and Gujarat Titans won the match by 6 runs.
Among the bowlers of Gujarat Titans, Mohit Sharma, Azmatullah Omarzai and Umesh Yadav took 2 wickets each and Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore took 1 wicket.
