The third match of IPL 2024 was held between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and chose to field.
Kolkata Knight Riders Innings:
Kolkata Knight Riders scored 7 wickets for 204 runs at the end of 20 overs mainly based on the batting of Philip Salt at the beginning of the innings and Andre Russell at the end of the innings.
Philip Salt scored 54 runs off 40 balls and he hit three 4s and three over 6s and Andre Russell scored 64 off 25 balls and hit three 4s and seven 6s.
Apart from these two key performers, Ramandeep Singh and Rinku Singh played well. Ramandeep Singh scored 35 runs and Rinku Singh scored 23 runs.
At a time when Kolkata Knight Riders was 119 for 6 after 14 overs and with Rinku Singh and Andre Russell just coming in to bat, it looked like Kolkata Knight Riders would not be able to set a big target for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Kolkata Knight Riders scored 89 runs in the last 6 overs and Russell alone scored 64 runs.
T Natarajan bowled well for Sunrisers Hyderabad and he took 3 wickets with 32 runs in 4 overs. Also Mayank Markande took 2 wickets and Pat Cummins took 1 wicket.
Sunrisers Hyderabad Innings:
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s two openers – Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma batted in a flurry at the start of the innings and made a partnership of 60 runs off 33 balls.
In the 6th over, Mayank Agarwal was dismissed by Harshit Rana, caught by Rinku Singh. At the end of 6 overs of powerplay, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s score was 65 runs for 1 wicket.
After that Rahul Tripathi and Iden Markram were playing well but they got out for 20 runs and 18 runs respectively. Markram was dismissed by Varun Chakaravarthy in the twelfth over and Rahul Tripathi was dismissed by Sunil Narine in the thirteenth over.
At the end of 13 overs, Sunrisers Hyderabad were 111 runs for 4 wickets. In other words, 98 runs in 7 overs were required to win and it seemed that Kolkata Knight Rider would win very easily. But Heinrich Klaasen played brilliantly and almost took Sunrisers Hyderabad to a winning position.
Heinrich Klaasen was out on the fifth ball of the last over by Harshit Rana for 63 runs off 29 balls.
5 runs needed to win on the last ball of the last over but Pat Cummins failed to score any runs on the last ball and Kolkata Knight Riders won by 4 runs.
