After the grand opening ceremony of IPL 2024, the first match of this year’s IPL began between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings. Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bat.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Innings:
Deepak Chahar opened the bowling for Chennai Super Kings and the ball was swinging well in the first over. Faf du Plessis started his innings by hitting an in swinging ball to the offside for a superb boundary.
Tushar Deshpande started the attack with the new ball in the second over. Faf du Plessis hit two boundaries in this over with perfect placement and timing.
Faf du Plessis was outstanding in the third over as well. Punched Deepak Chahar sometimes over mid-off and sometimes on the backfoot and hit three wonderful boundaries. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s run at the end of the third over was 33 for no loss. Virat Kohli then played 2 balls for 1 run and Faf du Plessis played 17 balls for 30 runs.
In the fourth over Theekshana bowled economically and at the end of 4 overs the run was 37 for no loss.
Then in the fifth over, Chennai Super Kings new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad replaced Deepak Chahar with Mustafizur Rahman. Faf du Plessis hit a superb boundary on the offside in the second ball of this fifth over. Just when it looked as if Faf du Plessis would single-handedly control the fate of the game today, Mustafizur Rahman dismissed him on the next ball when he hit high on a slower one. Rachin Ravindra rushes forward and leans down to take an excellent catch. He took the wicket again in the last ball of this over. His ball touched the outside of the bat of right-hander Rajat Patidar and Dhoni took a simple catch and the runs were 41/2 after 5 overs.
In the next over, Rituraj again brought Deepak Chahar into the attack from the other end and the change of end worked well. On the third ball of this over, Maxwell sliced an incoming delivery from Deepak Chahar and was caught by Dhoni. Where it was 33 for no loss at the end of the first 3 overs, the run at the end of 6 overs of the power play was 42 runs for 3 wickets. Chennai Super Kings bounced back to the match in a great way.
Jadeja and Theekshana bowled quite economically in the 7th and 8th overs respectively. In the 8th over, Virat Kohli became the 6th player to score 12000 or more runs in T20 cricket as he reached his ninth run of the innings.
Jadeja gave 8 runs in the ninth over and at the end of this over a strategic time out was called. At the end of 9 overs Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s run was 63-3.
In the 10th over, Kohli hit a superb boundary off Theekshana on the leg side. At the end of 10 overs, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s run was 75-3.
In the 11th over, Jadeja bowled brilliantly and gave just one run off the over. At the end of 11 overs Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s run was 76-3.
Mustafizur was brought in to attack in the 12th over and bowled brilliantly. In this over, He took 2 wickets for 3 runs. Among the two wickets, the first wicket was Kohli’s. Kohli’s catch was the result of the joint efforts of Rahane and Ravindra. WhenRahane was sliding towards the boundary after taking the catch he threw the ball towards Ravindra who was running close to him and caught it. At the time of the second wicket, Mustafizur flicked the wrist while releasing the ball and Green missed the ball completely and was out bowled. At the end of 12 overs Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s run was 79-5.
Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik then started building a partnership and took singles to keep the scoreboard going till 14 overs. Anuj Rawat hits two boundaries off Chahar in the 15th over. The run at the end of the 15th over was 102-5.
Theekshana gave 14 runs in the 16th over. On the last ball of this over, Dinesh Karthik hit a great over boundary. Strategic break started at the end of this over. At the end of the 16th over, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s run was 116-5.
Mustafizur gave only 7 runs in the 17th over. At the end of the 17th over, the run was 123-5.
18 overs were quite fruitful for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Tushar Deshpande gave 25 runs in this over. There were three over boundaries in this over. Dinesh Karthik hit one and Anuj Rawat hit two over boundaries in this over.
Mustafizur came to bowl in the 19th over. His bowling performance before this over was 3-0-13-4. But 16 runs were scored in this over.
Tushar Deshpande bowled three wides in the 20th over but bowled well enough. He gave only 9 runs in this last over. On the last ball of this over, Dhoni ran out Anuj Rawat with a direct underarm throw. Royal Challengers Bengaluru reached 173-6 at the end of the 20th over courtesy of Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik’s 95-run partnership.
Chennai Super Kings Innings:
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra opened the innings on behalf of the Chennai Super Kings team. Both of them, especially Rachin Ravindra, looked quite fluent. At the end of the third over, Chennai Super Kings was 28 runs for no loss.
Ruturaj Gaikwad was out for 15 off the last ball of the fourth over. This ball from Yash Dayal got the thick edge of Ruturaj Gaikwad’s bat and Green took the catch at the second attempt. After that, Ajinkya Rahane came on first down and he and Rachin Ravindra continued to bat aggressively. At the end of 6 overs of Power Play, Chennai Super Kings was 62 runs for 1 wicket.
Rachin Ravindra was caught by Rajat Patida off Karn Sharma on the last ball of the 7th over. Rachin Ravindra played a very good innings of 37 runs off 15 balls. Next came Daryl Mitchell who is another New Zealand player like Rachin Ravindra.
Daryl Mitchell also started batting aggressively, especially in the ninth over, he hit two 6s off two consecutive balls in Karn Sharma’s over.
At the end of 10 overs, Chennai Super Kings were 92 runs for 2 wickets. But in the 11th over, Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed by Green. Maxwell took a superb catch in the deep. Ajinkya Rahane also played well and scored 27 runs off 19 balls. In the 13th over, Daryl Mitchell was dismissed by Green. Rajat Patidar caught this time. After 13 overs Chennai Super Kings was 114 runs for 4 wickets.
After that Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja put on a remarkable unbeaten partnership of 66 runs and they gave Royal Challengers Bengaluru no chance to get back into the game. Shivam Dube scored 34 runs off 28 balls and Ravindra Jadeja scored 25 runs off 17 balls.
Chennai Super Kings picked up the runs required to win in 18.4 overs and won the game by 6 wickets.
